Water-Wise Materials
Gravel & Rock Install for Utah Yards
Decorative rock and gravel is the core material in most Utah zeroscaping projects — and it's what gives water-wise yards their structure, drainage, and clean finished appearance. Unlike mulch that decomposes and requires annual replacement, properly installed rock lasts decades. Unlike grass, it requires no mowing, no irrigation, and no fertilizing.
Lundberg Landscape sources and installs a full range of rock and gravel materials suited to Salt Lake County's soil conditions, drainage requirements, and aesthetic standards. We install professional-grade weed barrier under all rock installs to prevent the weed breakthrough that plagues DIY projects within 2–3 years.
Material Options
- 🪨 Decomposed granite (DG): Most popular, clean natural look, available in buff, gold, or rust tones. Best for broad coverage.
- 🪨 River rock / cobble: Rounded, smooth-worn rocks in 2"–6" sizes. Excellent for dry creek beds and decorative accents.
- 🪨 Crushed granite / crusher fine: Fine-grained, compacts firm — good for paths and park strips.
- 🪨 Lava rock: Lightweight, distinctive dark red-black color, excellent drainage properties.
- 🪨 Boulders: Large accent stones that add structure and visual weight to any design.
- 🪨 Flagstone: Flat stone for paths, patios, and stepping stones within rock beds.
Why Weed Barrier Matters — and Why Most DIY Installs Fail
The #1 complaint about rock landscaping is weed breakthrough within 2–3 years. This is almost always a weed barrier problem — either none was installed, a thin consumer-grade fabric was used, or it wasn't overlapped and staked correctly. Here's what Lundberg Landscape does differently:
Commercial-Grade Fabric
We use heavy-duty professional landscape fabric — not the thin garden-center rolls that degrade in Utah's UV and puncture easily. The fabric we install is rated for 20+ years of use under typical rock depths and prevents even rhizomatous weeds (the kind with runners) from penetrating from below.
Proper Installation Technique
Fabric must overlap by at least 12 inches at seams, be secured with fabric staples every 18 inches, and wrap up behind any edging border. Gaps at the edges and unsealed seams are where 90% of weed breakthrough occurs. We treat edges and seams as carefully as the center of the installation.
Correct Rock Depth
Rock must be installed at a minimum of 3 inches deep to block light from reaching weed seeds that land on top of the fabric. Under-depth installs look thin and allow the first generation of wind-blown weed seeds to establish on top of the rock. We install to proper depth for the material selected.
Pre-Treatment
Before fabric is installed, we apply a pre-emergent herbicide to the bare soil. This creates a second line of defense against any weeds that might penetrate the fabric over time or emerge from gaps. Combined with professional fabric, this reduces long-term maintenance to near zero.
Gravel & Rock Pricing in Utah
Installed cost varies by material, area size, depth required, and whether grading or existing material removal is needed. Decomposed granite, river rock, crusher fine, and lava rock all have different material costs and installation requirements — Russ walks through the options and tradeoffs during the quote.
Projects that bundle grass removal and rock install are typically more cost-effective than scheduling them separately. Call or text for a free quote — most are returned same day.
Drainage: The Most Important Design Consideration
Rock and gravel do not absorb water — they pass it through quickly. This is great in a rain event but requires proper grading to direct water where you want it. In Salt Lake County's clay soil, improper drainage leads to standing water on top of rock beds and water against foundation walls.
Every Lundberg Landscape rock install begins with a drainage assessment. We grade the site so water flows toward the street, toward drains, or into planted areas where it can absorb — not against your house or into neighboring properties. This step is skipped by many contractors and DIYers, and it's the leading cause of expensive problems 2–5 years after an install.
